Dengue fever causes deaths in Mato Grosso do Sul state in Brazil

Dengue fever infection has caused 14 deaths since the beginning of the year across the state. Six of the deaths occurred in the capital, Campo Grande, which has been the site of a major outbreak. Overall, there have been 23,153 cases reported in Campo Grande. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
