Dengue fever concentrated in 11 states in Brazil

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has reported that 74.5 percent of the reported cases of dengue fever have been registered in 11 states during the first 3 months of this year. These states account for 532,107 of the 714,226 cases reported nationally. These states include Rondônia, Acre, Amazonas, Tocantins, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Goiás.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting andreporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and manypersons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers should be aware that Brazil and other South American countries are experiencing dramatic increases in cases of dengue fever. In countries wherethe dengue fever virus is active, travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
