Dengue fever continues in Brazil

Several areas of Brazil continue to report cases and outbreaks of dengue fever.

In Salgueiro (Pernambuco State), dengue transmission peaked in April with up to 170 or more cases each week. The total so far is at least 1,800 cases, but there have been no new cases since early July.

In the state of Ceará, there have been more than 10,000 reported cases along with 24 deaths. This total is still less than for the same time period last year.

In Espírito Santo, there have been 20,205 casos registered in the first 7 months of this year. Of these, 404 has serious complications or dengue haemorrhagic fever. There were 11 deaths.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
