Dengue fever continues in state of São Paulo, Brazil

Dengue fever continues to be a major public health risk in the state of São Paulo. As an example, in the city of São José do Rio Preto (population approximately 400,000), there were 777 new dengue fever cases recorded in one day this week. The total for the year has reached 21,288 cases with 11 deaths.

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
