Dengue fever continues to be a problem in Dominican Republic (update)

At least 34 people have died from dengue fever this year while 4,806 cases of the disease have been reported. This is 3 times the number of cases noted last year for the same time period. Most of the reported cases in the past 4 weeks have come from the provinces of Santo Domingo, Santiago, Espaillat, San Cristóbal, Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi, Azua, Sánchez Ramírez, Hermanas Mirabal and in the Distrito Nacional.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
