Dengue fever continues to be major risk in all states of Brazil

During the month from March to April, every state in Brazil reported cases of dengue fever. After Minas Gerais, where there were 11,000 new cases in this one month period, Ceará had the second highest increase, almost 5,000 cases. Twenty municipalities in this state have epidemic levels of dengue ( Alcântaras, Aquiraz, Arneiroz, Barbalha, Catarina, Coreaú, Eusébio, Hidrolândia, Horizonte, Ipu, Jardim, Jucás, Mucambo, Ocara, Piquet Carneiro, Pires Ferreira, Porteiras, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Trairi and Varjota). In Ceará, there were also 12 deaths.

In 13 states, there was a decrease in the number of new reported cases. The state of São Paulo continues to be the hardest hit by this infection.

Advice For Travellers

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
