Dengue fever continues to cause deaths in Dominican Republic (update)

In the latest dengue fever report by the Ministry of Health, 5 people died in one week in the capital city, bringing the total number of deaths so far to 85. There have been 11,343 reported cases of dengue with 239 diagnosed as dengue haemorrhagic fever. There may be many more unreported cases of dengue since counting and reporting cases may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
