Dengue fever continues to increase in Uruguay

Uruguay has been experiencing a sustained increase in the number of reports of people infected with dengue. So far almost 600 suspected and confirmed infections have been reported, mostly from the departments of Montevideo, Canelones and Salto.

Advice For Travellers

While the overall risk of exposure to dengue in Uruguay is low, it may be higher in areas where there is active transmission of this virus by local mosquitoes. All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate
