Dengue fever creates emergency alert in Thailand

With at least 13,200 reported cases of dengue fever along with 16 deaths, public health officials have set up a war room to try to control this infection. Cases are being reported from all over the country. So far this year, the number of cases and fatalities is 4 times higher than the same period last year.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
