Dengue fever epidemic in Guangdong may be levelling off

There may be an end in sight for the dengue fever epidemic in Guangdong. The increase in the number of cases of dengue fever appears to have stopped with only 266 new cases reported. So far, the province's 20 prefecture-level cities reported a total of 42,358 cases, most of whom occurred in Guangzhou. There were 6 deaths and over 17,000 hospitalizations.

Although the risk for exposure may be decreasing, travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is still active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
