Dengue fever epidemic in Paraguay continues unchecked (update)

The Paraguayan Ministry of Health has confirmed a total of 55,831 cases of dengue fever along with 41 deaths. The number of confirmed cases is double the number reported in the same time frame last year. However, the total number of people reported with symptoms of dengue fever is 85,433. Nearly 70 percent of the reported cases are from Central Department with the city of Asunción accounting for 13 percent. So far, 10,736 people have been hospitalized, creating a heavy burden on hospital facilities.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
