Dengue fever epidemic in Paraguay exceeds 120,000 cases (update)

With 120,561 suspected and confirmed cases of dengue fever this year, the epidemic in Paraguay continues unchecked. The majority of cases continue to be reported from Asunción and Central Department. As many as 1,000 or more persons are hospitalised each day for this infection. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
