Dengue fever epidemic in Paraguay may be subsiding

The large epidemic of dengue fever may be subsiding in Paraguay since the number of new cases appears to be decreasing. So far in 2013, there have been 136,655 reported cases, including 62 deaths. Although the trend seems to be decreasing, there may still be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
