Dengue fever in Brazil

At the end of 2014, a total of 587,800 cases of dengue fever were registered nationwide in 2014. There were 405 deaths. The southeast area of the country was most affected, followed by the west central. northeast north and south.

Highly affected states included Acre, Goias (municipalities: Goiania, Luziania, Aparecida de Goiania, Anapolis, Valparaiso de Goias, Pires do Rio, Jatai, Novo Gama, Ipora, Planaltina), Minas Gerais (municipalities: Sul de Minas, Passos), and Sao Paulo (municipality of Campinas had worst outbreak in history).

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
