Dengue fever in Brazil (update)

While many states in Brazil have had serious outbreaks of dengue fever this year, the latest reports are from Mato Grosso , where 43,386 cases (with 107 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever and 34 deaths) have been registered. Rio Grande do Norte has reported 8,362 cases with 12 deaths.

There may be many more cases of dengue that are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness do not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
