Dengue fever in Central America (update)

Costa Rica - The worst outbreak of dengue fever ever in Costa Rica appears to have peaked. A total of 45,510 cases were reported with 111 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever but no deaths.
Honduras - Honduras has also experienced a very large outbreak of dengue fever with a total of more than 33,170 cases reported along with 3,675 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever and 26 deaths.
El Salvador - So far there have been more than 8,000 cases and 3 deaths reported.
Nicaragua - More than 3,000 cases and 8 deaths have been reported.

There may be many more unreported cases of dengue since counting and reporting cases may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
