Dengue fever in Central America (update)

Cases of dengue fever have been reported by the following countries in Central America:

  • El Salvado r - 11,507 suspected and confirmed cases; 1 death. Increasing trend; national health emergency declared.

  • Honduras - More than 7,000 suspected cases, along with 1,200 suspected cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever; 7 deaths. Increasing trend.

    • Marcovia - 115 cases. Increasing trend.
  • Nicaragua - more than 2,300 suspected cases; 1 death There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
