Dengue fever in Costa Rica and El Salvador

Costa Rica - As of mid-December, there have been 972 reported cases with 27 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. The most affected localities include Huetar Caribe in Limon province and Brunca.

El Salvador - By the end of 2014, there will have been more than 53,200 reported cases along with 173 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Four people have died.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
