Dengue fever in India and Pakistan

Regions of India that are reporting cases of dengue fever include:

• Delhi - over 15,000 cases with 38 deaths
• Punjab - 2 deaths in Sahnewal, Ludhiana, [number of cases not given].
• Maharashtra - 26 cases in Panvel Taluka, Raigarh district
• Tamil Nadu - almost 1,900 cases in Chennai

Pakistan:

• Punjab - 4,200 cases with 7 deaths; affected municipalities include Rawalpindi, Multan, Lahore.
• Sindh - over 9,000 case and 9 deaths in Karachi
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - slightly more than 2,000 cases

The risk of exposure to dengue fever virus varies from place to place and from low risk to high. All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
