Dengue fever in Mexico and Central America

The following countries are reporting cases and outbreaks of dengue fever:

  • Costa Rica - 2,615 cases
  • El Salvador - almost 15,000 suspected and confirmed cases
  • Guatemala - 8,822 cases with 4 deaths
  • Honduras - 31,405 cases
  • Mexico - almost 70,000 cases with 11 deaths. Affected states include Campeche (Campeche city, Ciudad del Carmen); Sonora (Hermosillo)
  • Nicaragua - 15,761 cases with 2 deaths
  • Panama - almost 1,600 suspected and confirmed cases

Advice

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
