Dengue fever in Mexico and Central America

Cases, deaths and outbreaks of dengue fever are being reported by the following countries:

  • Mexico - Nuevo Leon state reports 1,041 cases with 11 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever
  • El Salvador - 4 deaths among almost 47,000 cases nationwide
  • Honduras - at least 26,000 cases, but some may be chikungunya fever, not dengue
  • Panamá - 9 deaths among 4,700 cases

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
