Dengue fever in Mexico and Central America

Dengue fever cases and outbreaks are being reported by the following countries:

  • Costa Rica - more than 3,000 cases
  • El Salvador - almost 2,100 cases
  • Guatemala - almost 2,000 cases
  • Honduras - 8,003 cases
  • Mexico - more than 12,000 cases, including 400 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever
  • Nicaragua - almost 7,000 cases
  • Panama - 352 cases

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
