Dengue fever in Mexico and El Salvador

The following countries are reporting cases or outbreaks of dengue fever:

Mexico - nationwide, there have been almost 11,000 cases this year. Some of the affected states include Jalisco and Baja California Sur.

El Salvador - nationwide, there have been more than 45,500 suspected cases, of whom 1,100 have had serious complications including dengue haemorrhagic fever. There have been 4 deaths.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
