Dengue fever in mulitple states and cities in Brazil

Dengue fever cases and outbreaks are being reported from the following states and cities in Brazil:

  • Sergipe - 2,522 reported cases. Municipalities with a high risk include Simão Dias, Pinhão, Itabaianinha, Tobias Barreto, Aquidabã, Malhador, Nossa Senhora da Glória, Lagarto, and Maruim.
  • São Paulo - 17,088 reported cases with 2 deaths. Most affected cities include the city of São Paulo, Sorocaba, Londrina
  • Ceará - total cases 25,834 with 50 deaths and 1,240 cases reported in one week.
  • Espírito Santo - total cases 18,776
  • Bahia - 875 cases with 3 death in capital city San Salvador.
  • Mato Grosso - total cases 8,646 with 5 deaths. Affected cities include the capital city Cuiabá, Sinop, Rondonópolis, Alto Paraguai, Alta Floresta, and Várzea Grande.
  • Paraná - 28,085 cases, but with a decreasing trend.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
