Dengue fever in South America

In Venezuela, there have been almost 15,000 reported cases. The most affected states include Amazonas, Trujillo, Merida, and Zulia.

In Colombia, there have been 53,302 cases with 36 deaths while Peru is reporting almost 46,500 cases and 42 deaths.

Brazil has reported the most cases, over 1,600,000 with 530 deaths.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
