Dengue fever in southeast Asia

Dengue fever cases and outbreaks are being reported by the following countries and localities:

Philippines

  • National - there have been 23,867 reported cases nationwide. This number is approximately half as many cases for the same time period in 2013.
  • Northern Mindanao region - 2,107 cases; 6 deaths. The most affected localities include Misamis, Bukidnon, Misamis Occidental, Lanao Del Norte, Camiguin, Iligan City, and Ozamis City.
  • Cagayan De Oro City - 1,150 cases; 6 deaths.
  • Western Visayas region - 1,399 cases. The most affected localities include Capiz, Iloilo, and Aklan. -

Malaysia

  • National - 38,411 cases nationwide; 75 deaths.
  • Johor state - 2,050 cases; 12 deaths.

Singapore - more than 7,100 dengue cases

Sri Lanka - dengue fever said to be widespread and uncontrolled.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
