Dengue fever in southeast Asia

Cases and outbreaks of dengue fever are reported by the following countries:

  • Viet Nam - 19,753 cases with 12 deaths; Hanoi is an affected city
  • Thailand - 42,900 cases with 35 deaths; most affected provinces include Rayong, Trad, Petchaburi, Tak and Ang Thong.
  • Malaysia - approaching 70,000 with 300 cases daily; 201 deaths; most affected states include Selangor, Johor, and Perak.
  • Singapore - 5,726 cases

Advice

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
