Dengue fever in Tolima, Colombia, alarms health officials

With 762 reported cases of dengue fever and 2 deaths in children during the month of January, health officials in the province have issued warnings of an impending epidemic. The most affected areas include the municipalities of Ibagué, Espinal, Chaparral, Guamo, Mariquita, Flandes, Alpujarra, Venadillo and Lérida. There may be many more cases. Counting and reporting cases of dengue may be hampered by lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
