Dengue fever increasing in some areas of Venezuela

An increase in the number of reported cases of dengue fever has been noted in Caracas (more than 1,000 cases), Miranda (more than 1,200 cases) and Vargas (485 casrs). Nationwide, there have been more than 27,500 cases with 101 cases considered to be seriously ill (dengue haemorrhagic fever). The most affected states include Zulia, Aragua, Mérida and Táchira.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
