Dengue Fever - initial cases in Chiang Mai, Thailand, may signal start of larger epidemic

So far in 2012, authorities in Chiang Mai have registered more than a hundred cases of dengue fever but health specialists are concerned that there may be an even greater outbreak in the coming weeks to months. Meanwhile, a total of a total of 15,842 cases and 11 deaths were reported nationwide.

Travellers to Thailand can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
