Dengue fever is common infection in Central America

In Central America, several countries are reporting large numbers of cases of dengue fever. They include:

  • El Salvador - 19,341 cases with 1 death
  • Guatemala - 10,280 cases with 11 deaths
  • Honduras - 35,457 cases but no deaths
  • Mexico - almost 100,000 cases with 11 deaths
  • Nicaragua - 20,584 cases with 2 deaths

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
