Dengue fever is extensive in Brazil, especially the state of São Paulo

Cases, deaths and outbreaks of dengue fever are being reported by the following states (municipalities) in Brazil:

  • Nationwide, there have been 224,100 cases.
  • Goias (Goiania) - 7,608 cases.
  • Espirito Santo - in the 1st 2 months of 2015, 1,854 reported cases with 24 dengue haemorrhagic cases and 2 deaths.
  • Minas Gerais - 2,862 cases with 1 death
  • Parana - São Joao do Caiua
  • Santa Catarina
  • São Paulo – 123,738 reported cases with 35 deaths. 604 of 645 municipalities are affected. The most affected municipalities include Sorocaba (12,780 cases with 12 deaths), Marilia (7,240 cases with 14 deaths). Other affected municipalities include Campinas, Caraguatatuba, Catanduva, Florinea, Guarulhos, Mogi Guacu, Itapira, Paraguacu, Penapolis, San Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo city, Sumare, Taubate, and Trabiju.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
