Dengue fever is increasing in Surakarta, Central Java, Malaysia

Reports of dengue fever have increased in Surakarta, Central Java. So far this year, there have been 288 registered cases along with 7 deaths. However, there are reports that “hundreds of patients” are being treated for probable dengue in the local hospitals. Of the 51 subdistricts in the city, 38 of them are considered areas for dengue fever.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
