Dengue fever is now widespread in India

The following states in India are now reporting cases and deaths due to dengue fever:

  • Delhi - 255 cases (with 93 of these cases reported in just the last 9 days)
  • Gujarat - Amreli District reports 75 cases and 1 death
  • Maharashtra - Pune reports 181 cases
  • Punjab - 62 cases. The most affected municipality is Ludhiana.
  • Odisha - since June, 3,490 cases with 5 deaths. 26 of the state’s 30 districts affected.
  • Uttar Pradesh - Kanpur has reported 105 cases in the past month. There may be many more unreported cases of dengue since counting and reporting cases may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
