Dengue fever is widespread in the state of Ceará, Brazil

In less than one month, there have been more than 4,600 new dengue fever cases recorded in 100 municipalities. There have been 5 deaths. Since the start of this year, there have been almost 17,500 cases statewide. Municipalities such as Fortaleza, Arneiroz, Barbalha, Coreaú, Hidrolândia, Ipu, Jucás, Piquet Carneiro, Pires Ferreira and Porteiras are all considered to have epidemic levels of dengue.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
