Dengue fever likely to increase with the hurricane season in Mexico

The heat and rains in Mexico have increased the number of mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika virus. So far, over 650 probable cases of dengue fever are being studied in Tamaulipas. Most of the cases are coming from Matamoros, Reynosa, Tampico, and Altamira respectively.

With the start of hurricane season on June 1, officials are predicting that dengue will continue to increase and spread, and people are being urged to protect themselves against mosquitos.

Advice

All travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue, chikungunya or Zika infections do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
