Dengue fever outbreaks in Mexico and Central America (update)

Mexico

  • Colima - 211 cases; 45 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever; increasing trend.

  • Quintana Roo - 314 cases; 132 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Most affected municipalities include Othon P Blanco, Bacalar, Benito Juarez, and Solidaridad.

  • Tamaulipas - 82 cases; 25 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Most affected municipalities include Altamira, Tampico, and Madero. Honduras

  • San Pedro Sula, Cortes Department - as of March 4, 2013, more than 720 cases. There may be many more unreported cases since counting andreporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and manypersons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas wherethe dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to denguefever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
