Dengue fever outpaces chikungunya in Panama

Dengue - so far this year, there has been an increase in reported dengue fever cases compared to last year. The total has reached 5,026 cases with 9 deaths.

Chikungunya - With 54 reported cases (22 infected locally and 32 infected while travelling abroad), this outbreak is just beginning in Panama. Many more cases can be expected.

There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate since many persons with either infection do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. Since both viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes, travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
