Dengue fever problem worse in northern parts of Bolivia

At least 8,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported so far this year. Most of the cases have occurred in the northern part of La Paz Department, as well as in the Beni and Pando Departments. There have been at least 5 deaths recorded.

There may be many unreported cases sincecounting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care,and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areaswhere the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure todengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquitobites.
