Dengue fever rampant in Paraguay

Yesterday, there were 1,775 suspected cases of dengue fever reported. There are 1,205 people hospitalized for dengue at present, 38 of whom are in intensive care. Overall, there have been 67,122 reported cases this year along with 35 deaths. The most affected areas include Asunción City, and the departments of Central, Cordillera, Alto Paraná, Amambay, Paraguarí and Guairá.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting andreporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and manypersons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas wherethe dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to denguefever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
