Dengue fever reports from Brazil and South America (update)

In Brazil, State Department of Health authorites are warning the public that a second outbreak of dengue fever may occur in Mato Grosso do Sul with the rainy season and high temperatures that begin in October. As of mid-September, there have been 100,225 reported cases with 45,395 of these being reported from the city of Campo Grande.

In Venezuela , there have been 32 670 reported cases. The most affected states include Mérida, Aragua, Zulia and Carabobo.

There may be many more unreported cases of dengue since counting and reporting cases may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
