Dengue fever reports from various states in Brazil

Dengue fever cases, outbreaks and occasional deaths are being reported by the following states (municipalities) in Brazil:

  • Mato Grosso do Sul - 3,800 suspected and confirmed cases statewide; most affected municipalities include Campo Grande, Itquirai, and São Gabriel d Oeste.
  • Pernambuco - Recife (more than 1,000 cases)
  • São Paulo - Catanduva (more than 6,000 cases and 7 deaths), Dracena (509 cases and 1 death), Limeira (1,650 cases; hospital
    overloaded with dengue cases), Piracicaba, Sorocabo (almost 4,000 suspected and confirmed cases)

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
