Dengue fever reports in Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela

Reports of dengue fever activity and a high risk of outbreaks due to this infection are continuing as the summer season evolves in tropical and semi-tropical Latin America. In Venezuela , the states of Zulia, Trujillo, Amazonas, Falcón and Nueva Esparta have reported increasing numbers of cases. Cases have also been reported from the state of Sinaloa, Mexico.

In Brazil , outbreaks or concerns for imminent outbreaks have been reported from the states of Paraná, Bahia and Santa Catarina.

Dengue fever continues to be a relatively high risk for tropical and semi-tropical areas of Central and South America. Many cases of dengue fever are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness do not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
