Dengue fever risk in many Brazilian states

Dengue fever cases, deaths and outbreaks are being reported by the following states in Brazil:

  • Sergipe - the most affected municipalities include Neópolis (1 death), Aracaju and Nossa Senhora do Socorro.
  • Goiás - 19,584 reported cases with 11 deaths in first 6 weeks of this year. The most affected municipalities include Goiânia, Aparecida de Goiânia and Pirenópolis.
  • Espírito Santo - almost 1,400 cases (44 of whom are severe) and 2 deaths.
  • Santa Catarina - 151 cases statewide, but mostly in Itajaí.
  • Rio de Janeiro - 396 cases in Resende.
  • São Paulo - epidemic levels in 20 cities with 28 deaths with approximately 30-40,000 cases this year.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
