Dengue fever risk is high in Brazil and Paraguay

Two countries in South America are reporting outbreaks of dengue fever.

  • Parana - 316 cases with 1 case of dengue haemorrhagice fever
  • Rio Grande do Sul - 1st case reported
Paraguay - After the worst outbreak of dengue fever in its history in 2013 (285,601 cases and 248 deaths), there are already reports of 1 death this year.

Many cases of dengue fever are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness do not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
