Dengue fever still a problem in Mato Grosso, Brazil

Since January, there have been more than 9,000 reported cases of dengue fever throughout the state. Of these, more than 1,000 cases were registered in the capital city Cuiabá. Other cities with significant numbers of cases include Rondonópolis, Sinop and Várzea Grande. There have been 5 deaths.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
