Dengue outbreak in Miguelópolis, São Paulo State, Brazil

A recent surge in possible cases of dengue fever has alerted the 20,000 residents of Miguelópolis in São Paulo State that a possible outbreak of dengue may be underway. Before the 35 new cases were reported this month, the city had registered only 18 cases all year. Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
