Dengue risk is high in some South American countries

The following countries are reporting substantial numbers of dengue fever cases:

  • Colombia - more than 46,500 cases with 31 deaths
  • Peru - 24,439 cases with 34 deaths
  • Brazil - over 1 million cases with 378 deaths
  • Paraguay - almost 33,000 cases

Argentina also is reporting cases of dengue fever, although smaller numbers (2,517 cases)

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
