Dengue risk is widespread in Brazil

The Ministry of Health has identified 533 municípalities where there is a high risk of exposure to dengue fever. An additional 117 municipalities are considered to be at risk for an epidemic of this infection. Cities at risk include 10 state capitals, including Belém in Pará; Porto Velho in Rondônia; Maceió in Alagoas; Natal in Rio Grande do Norte; Recife in Pernambuco; São Luís in Maranhão; Aracaju in Sergipe; Vitória in Espírito Santo; Cuiabá in Mato Grosso and Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
