Dengue situation worsens in Paraguay

In just the first 3 weeks of 2013, there have been 9 reported deaths due to dengue fever. At present, there are 8,521 reported cases, 10 other possible deaths, and 670 hospitalizations, 34 of whom are in intensive care. Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
